Monte Cristo just one treasure among Mountain Loop Highway's fall colors

Dozens of mining artifacts, such as this motor, are to be found at the Old Monte Cristo Townsite, 30 miles east of Granite Falls. In the late 1800s, some 2,000 people lived in this narrow canyon deep in the mountains near the head of the South Fork of the Sauk River. Picnic tables cater to modern-day visitors.
