Seattle clings to its struggling summer sockeye

Even a subsistence fishery for sockeye is cause for celebration among Muckleshoot salmon fishermen, engaged in a brief fishery at the Ballard Locks in July. There weren't enough fish for either a commercial or a sport fishery this year, but Richard Penn, left, and Dennis Anderson, Jr., were allowed to catch fish for Muckleshoot ceremonial dinners and family tables.
