Seattle's 'new urbanism': making smart, sustainable, stylish dwellings

In Seattle's Judkins Park neighborhood, a four-star BuiltGreen contemporary house is built in the driveway of an old red farmhouse. "This is true infill because it's just using the space needed to add the dwelling," says designer Bradley Khouri of b9 Architects. Multifamily zoning helped. So did the mix of sustainable features like a solar hot-water system and fashionable amenities like Ann Sacks tile and a Viking range.
