Eating away at the competition

Erik Denmark earned a spot in the Nathan's Famous hot-dog contest by winning a June 3 qualifier, pictured above, outside Shea Stadium in New York. Denmark forced a tie in regulation by eating 26-1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes. He then polished off 3-1/2 more in a 1-minute overtime, which also ended in a tie — but he swallowed first.
