Our Way: Fall Fashion in Seattle for 2013

I was a little surprised when I was first asked to photograph the annual fashion issue for Pacific Northwest magazine. It's not something I had ever done before, and I'm not fashionable, unless plain button-downs, Merrell's and kneepads would ever be considered a trend.

However, upon talking about the concept with writer Tyrone Beason and editor Carol Nakagawa, I knew I had to give it my best shot. They envisioned a transportation theme, with fashions that functioned and moved with us as we commute. Seattle has an abundance of fun, visually interesting options, so we started to brainstorm.

Tyrone wrangled the clothes from local clothiers AllSaints, (the late) Blackbird, and Nordstrom and retailers Barneys New York and Macy's at Southcenter. Carol and I chose models Andrea Goodman and John Zoeller from Seattle Models Guild. And I scouted six locations that we would photograph over the course of six days: the Yesler bridge over Interstate 5, Big People Scooters in Sodo, the route 36 bus line on King County Metro, King Street Station, Tukwila light rail station, and the Washington State Ferry to Bainbridge Island.

We hired experienced stylist Glynne Davies to lead the way and scheduled two intense days of shooting, the first with Andrea solo and the second with both Andrea and John. It was a little crazy, and looking back, I don't think I would try to schedule three locations with two outfit changes in each place for one, let alone two people. However, it was a learning process, and the first thing I learned is to temper my ambitions of how much can realistically be done in a day.

We turned our photo studio at the Times into a dressing room and home base, and set out from there. Glynne brought her arsenal of products on the road as we changed at bus stops, the light-rail office, parking lots, and in the restrooms on the ferry. I tried to keep things as simple as possible for gear - borrowing a large reflector from fellow staff photographer John Lok, using small speedlights and spare hands to hold them instead of stands.

My favorite images from the shoot were the ones on the bus - no set up, just an empty bus with some great light on the way south to Beacon Hill, and a full bus of dynamic, cooperative people heading back north. It felt natural and real, the way fashion is supposed to work in practice.

I can't thank the people who made this happen enough - working with writer Tyrone Beason and editor Carol Nakagawa is always wonderful. Model Andrea Goodman is as gracious and warm on the inside as she is beautiful on the outside - Glynne brought humor, patience and skill (and accessories) to each shoot and our male model John Zoeller kept a smile on his face even when we were yanking clothes over his head that were made for a much shorter man than him. Pacific magazine writer Rebecca Teagarden saved us with her great shoe and accessory collection when we ran short. Thank you also to Big People Scooters / Vespa Seattle in Sodo and SoundTransit and Amtrak for making our Light Rail and King Street Station images possible.
